NEW FIRM OFFERS TELECOMS TRAINING
Competition in market leads to new demand for technical education
The Island’s increasingly competitive telecoms market has spawned a new business to train people how to understand the technologies.
Comtrain Ltd has been set up by specialist Gordon Porter who recently moved to the island with his Jersey-borm wife and their two children.
Mr Porter has 16 years of experience in the industry. He setup his first business in Munich in 1990 and having built an experienced team of over 20 staff, has since provided training to a number of well-known names including Orange, BT, the BBC and Bank of America. In 2004, he merged his company, ETS with Power IT Education, to form Q6, a surrey based firm with which he continues to be involved.
’We used to come back to Jersey a lot and I always loved it. We made the decision three years ago to turn the business into an internet-based company using home-working and tele-working and one day I realised that we could be doing business from anywhere - so we moved our headquarters to Jersey’. he explained.
Comtrain, setup about four weeks ago, specialises in voice, data, mobile, wireless and internet technologies. ’Essentially we provide sales and technical training on the technology and the equipment. Our courses are ideal for engineers, support staff and sales personnel’.
’There are a lot of companies in Jersey which provide training in professional development, finance and IT, but there is no company providing specialist telecoms training - people have to go out of the island for that.
In addition, Comtrain provides a range of technology briefs and executive overviews which aim to explain the technology in a light, informative way.
These are designed for non-technical personnel who just need an overview, such as a recruitment company or a law firm which needs to understand their clients industry.
Likewise, our overviews are designed for busy executives and senior managers who need to understand a particular technology but perhaps also need to understand the market or some of the business issues, for instance if a senior executive in a law firm or a finance house is being pushed to implement an in-house internet telephony/VoIP system’.
’The whole of the industry is going through a complete change and re-inventing itself, which is very exciting for us and for them,’ he added.
